چکیده

We adapt the interactive spline model of Wahba to growth curves with covariates. The smoothing spline formulation permits a nonparametric representation of the growth curves. In the limit when the discretization error is small relative to the estimation error, the resulting growth curve estimates often depend only weakly on the number and locations of the knots. The smoothness parameter is determined from the data by minimizing an empirical estimate of the expected error. We show that the risk estimate of Craven and Wahba is a weighted goodness of fit estimate. A modified loss estimate is given, where σ is replaced by its unbiased estimate. ∗Permanent address: College of Staten Island, C.U.N.Y., Staten Island

Use of Two Smoothing Parameters in Penalized Spline Estimator for Bi-variate Predictor Non-parametric Regression Model

Penalized spline criteria involve the function of goodness of fit and penalty, which in the penalty function contains smoothing parameters. It serves to control the smoothness of the curve that works simultaneously with point knots and spline degree. The regression function with two predictors in the non-parametric model will have two different non-parametric regression functions. Therefore, we...

Multi-resolution Smoothing of Nurbs Curves Based on Non-uniform B-spline Wavelets

As a rule, an energy method is widely adopted for b-spline curve smoothing, but this method has the disadvantages such as massive calculation, computation complexity and low efficiency. Compared with the energy method, multi-resolution smoothing approaches nicely overcome these obstacles. Presently, some researches have been conducted on multi-resolution smoothing, but these efforts mainly aime...

A penalized spline approach to functional mixed effects model analysis.

In this article, we propose penalized spline (P-spline)-based methods for functional mixed effects models with varying coefficients. We decompose longitudinal outcomes as a sum of several terms: a population mean function, covariates with time-varying coefficients, functional subject-specific random effects, and residual measurement error processes. Using P-splines, we propose nonparametric est...

An extreme value approach for modeling Operational Risk losses depending on covariates

A general methodology for modeling loss data depending on covariates is developed. The parameters of the frequency and severity distributions of the losses may depend on covariates. The loss frequency over time is modeled via a non-homogeneous Poisson process with integrated rate function depending on the covariates. This corresponds to a generalized additive model which can be estimated with s...

Monotone B-spline Smoothing

Estimation of growth curves or item response curves often involves monotone data smoothing. Methods that have been studied in the literature tend to be either less exible or more diicult to compute when constraints such as monotonicity are incorporated. Built upon the ideas of Ramsay (1988) and Koenker, Ng and Portnoy (1994), we propose monotone B-spline smoothing based on L 1 optimization. It ...
